Study days - Hereford Diocese

Bishop mascall centreMembers of the New Way Team, Alister & Stephen, recently led a two-day, residential course at the Bishop Mascall Centre in Ludlow as part of Hereford Diocese's Continuing Ministerial Education programme.

The subject, "Ministering Communities in Mission", provided a opportunity to explore some of the issues associated with Local Collaborative Ministry and to develop new thinking to meet the challenges posed by the anticipated future reduction in ordained ministry.

The method was inter-active learning done within small Learning Communities which were created by the participants as the first step of the programme.
The topics covered were:-

  • Baptism & Ordination: An exploration of when ministry begins.
  • Whole-life Ministry: Recognising that most ministry happens in family, work and neighbourhood well outside the life and sphere of church
  • Learning Communities: modelling the practice of learning from each other out of personal experience and God's word revealed differently in each person.
  • Developing Gifts: An opportunity to test Roland Allan's assertion that "every Christian community has within it sufficient gifts for its ministry".
  • The Ministry of Enabling: contrasting Enabling the ministry of others with the Doing of ministry on behalf of others and coming to see our churches as leaderful communities.

The programme generated considerable creativity in which everyone, the New Way Enablers included, were enriched.

This programme is available to other groups and can be tailored to specific contexts.
